Believe!

As I have helped people with their health the past couple of years, I have thoroughly enjoyed helping people find the beauty of natural healing.  It makes so much sense.  It is gentle, noninvasive, and it works!!!!  Maybe not overnight.  But it is a wonderful process and creates permanent healing.

HOWEVER, I have struggled with one blaring thing.  I have been working on letting go of it, because it is not my issue.  But it is a blaring thing, nonetheless.  And it is worse with people you know and love.  This is it...no matter how much you say you will try anything, no matter how much you want something to be better and feel better -  if you don't truly believe that it can happen then it won't.  Simply put. If you aren't quite sure that essential oils will work better than tylenol or other pain meds, if you aren't quite sure that a supplement like ASEA can heal you starting with every little cell in your body, if you don't believe that changing the way you eat will dramatically improve your quality of life in every way, then dabbling in it and trying it and doing it for a little while and then saying it doesn't work - that's just a formula for failure.

I challenge you to believe that there is another way!  Believe that you can figure out a way to relieve your pain, believe that you can reverse diseases like diabetes and heart disease, believe that you can let go of your weight and leave it by the wayside.  Get to the root of your problem and truly HEAL.  FOREVER!  Believe that there are tools that God has given us in this world, to naturally heal us!  Believe that there are solutions.  I can't wait to build my business and guide more people to heal naturally.  My life has been greatly enriched and continues to be enriched as I find new ways to heal and feel GREAT.  Not just good, but GREAT!  It has been a long journey for me and taken a while to navigate and figure out what really works best for my own body.  But it has been so worth it!  I don't miss eating what everyone else eats, for I have found food that makes my body sing that tastes wonderful to me.  I don't miss going to the doctor's office to get antibiotics.  I don't miss relying on doctors to tell me what is wrong.  I feel so empowered to have learned how to be the healer in my own home.  I challenge each of you to look deep inside, see what is missing, and BELIEVE that there is a solution to your problem!  And if you need help, I am here!  Email me at wholefoodswholelife@gmail.com for pricing and coaching programs. We will be Certified Health Coaching soon!  But for now check in with Whole Foods Whole Life.

'Tis the Season

So it's time in the season that we are about sick of being sick!  Bring on the warm weather! :-)  Many people are dealing with so many illnesses right now.  It is heart wrenching to see everyone go through it, not to mention how miserable it makes everyone feel and how much it interrupts life.  I just got two notices from my daughters classroom that there are multiple children with strep throat and pink eye in the class.  Good news for us, we've never had strep throat, and I don't think this year is going to be the year.  I don't have to worry about those notices.   How is it that I don't have to obsess about the germs and worry constantly that my kids will contract things from other kids?   I don't say this to boast at all, I share it because I want you to be able to find the same success!  Last year I shared some helpful info in this post.

There are many factors as to how well a family will resist severe illness.  But one major factor in determining how many viruses we catch is DIET.  Yes, I know, you hate to hear that word.  It seems like it should be much more complicated than that.  But it really isn't!  Think of this...what we put into our body affects the health of our body.  And certain substances and foods actually lower our immune system's ability to function.  So if we feed our bodies with nutrient-dense foods, then our immune systems will be strengthened.  If we are eating processed, non nutrient-dense foods, then there is nothing to help strengthen our bodies' defenses.  I heard someone once compare the inside of our bodies to a pond.  If the pond is dirty, it becomes a swamp and attracts bugs and all kinds of ugly things.  If the pond is clean, the bugs will stay away.  They are simply not attracted to the clean environment.  Same with our bodies.  If my inner terrain is healthy and "clean", it will not attract the same amount of viruses as someone's inner terrain that is unclean and unhealthy.

There are other steps in addition to diet that will help.  (Vitamins, exercise, etc.)  But diet alone will eradicate a good part of the illnesses.  If the thought seems overwhelming, just do one thing at a time.  The change will not happen overnight...we have been getting milder illnesses as the years have gone on by the small changes we have made each year.  But for a first step, try, for example, taking the sugary cereal out for breakfast.  If that's too big of a step, start to combine sugary cereal with a less sugary cereal.  It takes a while to change the taste buds.  Then start eating less-sugary cereal with fruit on top.  And, ultimately, replace the processed cereal with a true, bonafide, whole grain like oatmeal!  The biggest thing to remember is that it starts with YOU, the parent, or the mom.  You will start to change your own diet, and the family will follow in time.

Here's to a healthier 2012!!!!!!

Healing

For those of you who haven't read my blog before, here is where you can read my story. Healing is an incredible journey, a road filled with learning and growth. I have healed in so many different ways and have learned so many exciting things! While I don't claim that everyone who experiences healing can do so fully by just changing their diet, I do believe that shifting to a whole foods, nutrient-dense diet will make a world of difference and give one a foundation upon which to experience more healing. The mind, body and spirit are deeply interconnected, each part being influenced greatly by the other. I have mentioned before that in order to be balanced we must balance our "secondary food" (the actual food that we eat), with our "primary food" (our lifestyle - areas such as spiritual practice, exercise, career and relationships). Balance and healing will only take place when all of these areas of our lives are running more smoothly. (Notice I say "more" smoothly, because life is never perfect :-) I have a deep religious belief which, for me, has contributed to my healing above and beyond diet. I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Jesus Christ is the center of our gospel message. We believe that it is He who heals all sin, pain, grief, suffering and sickness. He is the true source of healing and light and if we turn to Him, we can be healed. After all I can do, it is He that makes up the difference and makes me become whole again.

On this Easter Sunday we celebrate Christ's life and Resurrection. He died so that man may live. Not only physically, but spiritually. I am so grateful for this gift. And so amidst all the food talk here and my belief that food is healing and has medicinal properties, may we remember who is the divine source of healing. And that He will lead us on the right healing path for our particular circumstance when we are need of that healing.

Natural Healing

"Given the chance, the body will heal itself, by itself." (Joshua Rosenthal, Founder of the Institute of Integrative Nutrition)

Our bodies are incredible creations. They were designed to heal themselves. On the most basic level, when we get a cut or scrape, the body heals itself - with a little help from a protective covering. When a bone is broken, with the proper setting, it heals. So why don't we trust our bodies to heal in other circumstances? Why do we run to the first pharmaceutical drug we can find to help our symptoms when we don't feel well? Now, I have to say that I think there is a place for medication. It has saved many a life and I am grateful for modern medicine. But my opinion is that it is
highly over-used and misused and, in many cases, not the best option.

In my quest for healing, I have found so many non-invasive, non-toxic things that have helped my body to heal. They are out there, but it does take some research to find the right methods for you. And these holistic, safe alternatives often work better than anything else. They may cost some money. But insurance co-pays and deductibles and non-covered procedures cost money too.

So, as is the topic here, let
food be thy medicine. It is healing, it has medicinal properties, and if you are not feeling well - look at your diet first. It is true that there may be many other factors at play. So if you don't have an emergency situation, looking at your diet first, getting a handle on that, and then exploring other areas that need help would be the smartest order to proceed. Many people gain a clarity of mind and feel less stress and overwhelm once they change their diet. So the next steps to take become much more clear then.

Think of it this way, "toxic in, toxic out". If your food is toxic (unhealthy, processed, and devoid of nutrients), your life has the potential to be toxic. What we put into our bodies, if consistently unhealthy and processed, may eventually manifest itself as an illness. If our bodies do not go there, they are likely to go to decreased immunity, pain, and/or loss of energy. The environment inside our bodies matters.
What we put into our bodies matters. If we are suffering, it could be because our diet is suffering.

The thing about natural healing that no one likes, though, is that it
takes time. It is not an overnight process. Society wants a quick fix, so natural healing is not popular. I became ill after the birth of my 4th child almost 2 years ago and, while I am doing much, much better, I am still in the process of healing. I have fine-tuned my food and now I have gone on to other tools that are helping me become even more well. (Exercise, spiritual practice, energy healing & just starting to explore the world of essential oils - to name a few.)

Please join me in the natural healing journey. It is truly a rewarding one!

Welcome to Whole Foods, Whole Life!

Sometimes our lives take a turn we don't expect. Sometimes we have to experience the depths of darkness to truly understand light and joy. And in the moment of intense trial, I don't know how much we appreciate that. But as we push through, we can see how we are being led through those challenges to learn, to gain empathy, and to eventually have an impact on others who may have to go through similar challenges later.

I have been on a journey with my health the past year and a half that has been bumpy and rocky, but at the same time has brought much learning, growth, strength and happiness. Opportunities are unfolding that would not have been possible otherwise. Because of my experience, I have started taking courses with the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, where I will become certified to be a holistic health counselor. I have started this blog in conjunction with my studies to impart information that I am learning and to share the vision of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, "to play a crucial role in improving the health and happiness of Americans, and through that process, create a ripple effect that transforms the world." Yes, I've always wanted to help transform the world...that's why I pursued a Master of Nonprofit Organizations degree before I had children. So now I just need to develop a nonprofit arm of my health coaching business. And voila, it will all come together :-)

To give you a sense of this journey...

I gave birth to four darling girls within less than 5 years. Yes, insane, but true. All in my 30's. And as you can imagine, it took its toll on my health, physically, as well as emotionally and spiritually. About 10 days after the birth of my 4th, I started experiencing some nausea/dizzy spells that were really concerning. After a couple of episodes I realized that it was associated with my digestion. Then started the 10 months of going from doctor to doctor, from test to test, with little to no results. I started with allopathic physicians and ended up at a holistic doctor, as well as a naturopath. They were able to provide more answers for me and their philosophies made a lot of sense to me. After a few months I was eating only a few foods, as most of them seemed to be causing reactions. Through some testing, it was indeed confirmed that I had developed a sensitivity to many, many foods. Another test that provided us with some information was a test taken by my holistic doctor for Candida (a yeast overgrowth). Digestive issues are very common when this yeast overgrowth is present.

Even though we had this information, the long and short of it is that things didn't seem to be improving. In fact they turned drastically worse by the end of the year. I had lost so much weight that it was now becoming dangerous. It was then that I met a naturopath who was able to, literally, get me on the right "path". If I ever wondered why I didn't meet her earlier in the journey, I remind myself that things happened in the exact manner that they were meant to happen for my maximum growth and learning. I hit rock-bottom and was immediately blessed to be able to start the rocky road UP. (Some weren't sure of my fate at that point.) This journey held within it some of my darkest days and I almost shudder when I think back on them. But I don't let my mind go there much, except for to be grateful that I have been able to experience so much healing in the past 11 months.

Throughout the significant learning, one learning has been key. And that is the fact that food has healing and medicinal properties and eating whole, unprocessed, organic foods can bring us to a much greater and vibrant health. I desire to help people understand how changing their diet can have such a large impact on their health, physically, as well as emotionally. How feeding their bodies with nutritious, whole foods will heal them or help prevent them from developing many chronic illnesses that are so rampant in our society today.

I recently listened to a lecture from Dr. Walter Willet who is the chair of the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health. He said that Type 2 diabetes is 92% preventable! Hear this, almost NO ONE needs to get diabetes. Heart disease is 81% preventable. And colon cancer is 71% preventable. (If you're interested, I can provide you with further details of that study.)

The Standard American Diet (SAD) is making us sick. And it truly is SAD! It does not need to be that way. I am still working on my healing, but I have come a long way. And I want to give others my hand to help them on this road of change. It is not easy, but one thing I can tell you is that it is very worth it. I hope you will continue to join me as I post information that may be of benefit to those who are interested in preventing or managing disease through diet and lifestyle!
